The speech I never made …

I’d just like to tell you how religion has inspired me to organise tonight’s event. As a confirmed atheist, that may seem a strange comment so let me explain; within minutes of the terrible events of 11th March appearing on our TV screens the world of Twitter was full of people suggesting we should "Pray for Japan". Now I have yet to meet anyone of any religious persuasion who can explain how their God can allow events like this to occur in the first place so "having a word with The Man Upstairs" seems, to me, a pretty pointless and hollow gesture.

The British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal will ensure all donations received from tonight’s gig will go to help the hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced, have lost family members, their possessions or their livelihoods.

I’d like to thank all of tonight’s acts who are performing for free, the band of helpers for their time and support and last but not least all of you who have put your hand in your pocket to support such a worthwhile cause. Thank you

Thanks

Firstly thanks to all the bands that played last night, not one of them let me down, despite most playing using some unfamiliar equipment and shorter sets than they would normally be used to. Taylor John’s House was an excellent venue and their sound engineer was spot on.

Secondly thanks to everyone who helped with publicity, printing, rattling things and donating, including The Earlsdon Mahoosive, Adrian for DJing, Kayleigh Thomson for taking pics, James for manning the doors and Rob Henson for his design skills

My last thanks goes to everyone who came along to watch, I’m sure you all agree that it was a brilliant night of live music, proving what a thriving music scene there is in Coventry.

I have just finished totting up the money raised, and can confirm that we have so far totalled £371. This doesn’t include money from collecting tins (which will be opened by the red cross) or PayPal payments which equate to £27.00 less £1.71 fees = £25.29. As soon as I have a final total I will post it up here, together with a copy of the receipt from The Red Cross.

I’m pleased to let you know that tickets for this event can be purchased on the door for £5 - rather than the £7 previously advertised

I hope this will allow a few more people to attend what promises to be a night of great live music in aid of a worthwhile cause

Hope to see you tomorrow night
